Many different medical reasons can lead to itching. You might have also heard this sensation referred to by the name of pruritus. In this article, we consider some of the reasons why itching can occur.
Chickenpox
This illness is brought on by infection with the varicella zoster virus, or VZV. It is characterized by the rash that has become associated with the condition in the minds of many. However, it is not only spread by touching the rash, but also through the air, such as when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The person remains infectious for a matter of days after the rash appears, typically up to 5 days. This is the point at which the rashes have been covered by something akin to a scab. After the acute infection, the virus remains in the person's body, but is dormant. Later in life, it may "reactivate" leading to a case of what is known as shingles. There is no known cure for chickenpox, but the patient may receive symptomatic relief.
Lyme disease
This illness is caused by at least three forms of a particular bacteria. A human can become infected through receiving a bite from an infected tick. This disease can come in different stages, first the initial one, then a middle phase, and finally a chronic stage. When treatment is provided early enough in the illness, it is often effective in avoiding entrance into chronic Lyme disease. However, should the chronic phase be reached, it may result in a variety of neurological symptoms. For instance, numbness may affect such a patient. Polyneuropathy may also occur. This is a situation where a collection of peripheral nerves in the individual's body all malfunction at the same time.
