Turmeric is a plant from the ginger family and it helps with inflammation by suppressing it. Inflammation is the redness, bumps, swelling and fever that occurs around an injury. The reason this happens is because the body uses this process to start healing. The redness is usually blood rushing to the scene to deliver supplies and eliminate waste while the swelling happens to create a barrier to prevent harmful viruses from entering.
This inflammation can be helpful however there are also times when it is harmful. It can destroy healthy tissue and cause more damage. A classic example of this would be something like asthma which is causes by someone's immune system running amuck. Too much inflammation can lead to organ problems like in the heart, brain and joints and advance the aging process. For instance when inflammation happens in arteries they are more prone to clog up. When this happens a heart attack may occur or a stroke. Also many health professionals link cancer and inflammation together.
