Because of today's hectic pace we all implement many methods for some type of relief. Have you ever pinched the bridge of your nose to relieve the pain of a headache? Or kneaded you neck and shoulders to relieve tension? How about soaking your feet or rubbing your calves after standing all day long? Or massaging or twisting your lower back for relief? We have all done this. Today some turn to professional massage therapists for relief, others turn to self help.
Massage is dated back to 460 BC. It has been around a long time and is proven to do what it professes to do; relieve pain, stress, and aching muscles. Massage is the manipulation of superficial and deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue to enhance function, aid in the healing process, and promote relaxation and well-being. The word massage comes from the French word 'massage' meaning
"friction of kneading". The Arabic word 'massa' meaning "to touch, feel or handle", Latin word 'massa' means "mass or dough".
Massage involves acting on and manipulating the body with pressure, tension, motion or vibration. This can be done manually or with mechanical aids. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can be applied with hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearm and feet. There are presently over eighty different types of modalities.
You can find writings about massage from ancient times in civilizations of Rome, Greece, India, Japan, China, Egypt and Mesopotamia. Hippocrates wrote of it in 960 BC. In Romania illnesses were treated by massage.
